Works are often created intuitively and take form of sculptures and installations. They involve casting, repetition, assembles of made and found objects. Frequently appearing figures of animals explore the non-verbal relationship between human and non-human species, representing the histories of humanity and animals, affect, learning from one another. Daria creates object-animal hybrids, new symbols, mythologies and iconographies, fragmented narratives, and use folklore themes, although she prefers to keep them ambiguous to leave room for interpretation and spectators’ exploration.
Daria’s work explores fusing the oneiric with the mundane, world building. There is also a hint of absurd and humour in her practice. By including playful notes in her work, it makes it more authentic to herself and her nature.
Control and letting go of control is an important dynamic in her practice. By using mediums like wax, there is a point where she cannot fully control it and it will create a shape on its own. There’s a need to balance the role of intention and the role of chance/randomness. She lets the element (like fire) do its work and finds comfort in it.
Beside her own practice, Daria works as a graphic designer for various commissions, publications, magazines, prints and posters as well as her own digital artworks that includes digital editing, to the point where photographs and scans become obscure, idyllic graphics.
Looking at her work more broadly, it’s about going back to the magical, folklore and the ritual of it. While she does a lot of digital based work, sculpture and installation are her ways of copying with it, keeping the connection to what’s oneiric but also tangible. It’s also what she wants people to see in it - but also always looking for viewers’ answers and opinions.
